EFL Awards success

27 March 2017

Paul Mayfield has been named Sky Bet League Two Supporter of the Year, with James Coppinger, John Marquis and Andy Butler up for awards.

Marquis and Coppinger are on a three-man shortlist to be named the best player in League Two, along with Luton Town’s Danny Hylton.

Forward Marquis is Rovers’ top scorer with 23 goals, while captain Coppinger has enjoyed a fantastic campaign and passed the 500 appearance mark for the club.

They join Luton Town forward Danny Hylton on a three-man shortlist, with the winner announced at the EFL Awards on Sunday April 9.

Andy Butler is one of three players in the running for PFA Community Player of the Year - along with Brighton's Liam Rosenior and Portsmouth's Christian Burgess.

Popular Rovers fan Paul Mayfield will also be attending the ceremony in London after being named the League Two Supporter of the Year.

Paul is well known face among fans, always with his iconic Rovers gnome in hand, and has been a leading light in the club’s Official Supporters Club for decades.

His bond with supporters and players alike was clearly shown when his partner Jill died suddenly in January within days of being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Fans and the club alike united to support Paul, with a minute’s applause at the next game and players embracing Paul after the win over Yeovil in solidarity – and dedicating the win to Jill’s memory.

Rovers chief operating officer Liam Scully said: “It is my belief that Paul should receive this award every year, however given the turbulent and traumatic year Paul has had I can think of no better honour than his efforts not only being recognised by Doncaster Rovers, but more so his story being shared across the EFL family.

“Paul is a gift to us but we would gladly share him with the Football League family. He is one of our own and we are so proud.”
