Ferguson on FA Cup

18 October 2016

Manager Darren talks about first round draw away to Oldham Athletic.

Darren Ferguson hopes the FA Cup first round draw will rekindle memories of going toe-to-toe with Premier League Stoke City in last season’s third round.

Ferguson’s side were pitched against League One Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park for the third time in just four seasons in another battle of the roses.

“I didn’t want to travel far because we’ve got Exeter the following week so if we weren’t going to be at home, it’s not a bad one in terms of travelling and we’ll probably take a good support,” said the Scot whose father Sir Alex won the trophy five times.

“It’s a fantastic tournament, I want to get as far as we can. It really grasped everyone last year when we got Stoke and a full house at home.

“It’s going to be a hard tie away from home – against anyone it would have been a hard tie away from home – and a team above us league-wise. It’s a winnable game, no question in my mind it’s a winnable game.”

Ferguson wouldn’t allow himself to get carried away with cup fever just yet though with two league fixtures to contend with before facing the Latics.

He said: “The most important bits are the next two games; we’re in a good position. We want to finish the month strongly, it’s going to be a tough match at Blackpool, they’re a good team and we’ll have to be a lot better than we were on Saturday to get a win.

“If we finish the month strongly then that’s a third of the season out of the way and hopefully we’ll be in a good position and we can then start focusing on a couple of cup matches.”
