Lawlor enjoying Rovers life

20 January 2017

Ian Lawlor says his idol Shay Given advised him to join Doncaster Rovers.

The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, who like Lawlor played for Manchester City, spoke to him the day before he signed for Rovers and said it was an opportunity he should take.

“I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and he has looked after me a lot to be fair to have someone like him, who is my idol, look after me is brilliant,” said Lawlor.

“I spoke to him before I moved here, when I got the deal here and after the Barnet game, he said it was a massive move and it was something that I needed to do.

“It’s good to have someone like him there is good and I always appreciate the advice that he gives me.”

The 22-year-old was handed his first Rovers start against Barnet last weekend, a side that he has played for in the past.

Lawlor made a vital save in the second half to keep the score at 3-1, and is happy that manager Darren Ferguson gave him the opportunity to play first team football.

“I was delighted that the gaffer put his faith in me to go out and play straight away,” he said.

“To get to know the boys and the management staff over the last seven days have been brilliant, it has been a lot easier this week in terms of settling in has been a lot easier.

“I’m looking forward to getting my head down over the next couple of years and help this big club as much as I can.”
