Rovers slipped off the top spot in Sky Bet League Two after a home loss to Exeter City.

Boss Darren Ferguson brought Matty Blair back in after suspension, with Luke McCullough also returning to the side.

The visitors went ahead after 16 minutes. A free-kick was played short into the path of Jordan Moore-Taylor, whose rifled shot into the top-right corner left Ian Lawlor helpless.

A few minutes later Lawlor came to the rescue, getting down quickly to prevent Moore-Taylor doubling the advantage.

Rovers were level after 26 minutes Tommy Rowe's clipped cross from the left was too high for visiting keeper Christy Pym, with Coppinger on hand at the far post to volley home.

Both sides pushed for goal, with John Marquis just faling to get on the end of a knockdown after 39 minutes.

A minute later Matty Blair, enjoying plenty of space down the right, was set free but fired over.

Ollie Watkins fired a late effort wide for the Grecians, but it remained level at the break.

There were no changes from either side at the break, but the visitors went ahead after 60 minutes after Rovers conceded a penalty. Joe Wright was penalised for a handball in the area.

Ryan Harley's spot-kick was saved by Lawlor, who produced another stop before David Wheeler fired it home.

Ferguson responded quickly, with Liam Mandeville coming on for Wright as Rovers went for a more attacking formation.

Rovers were doing all the pressing, with Tommy Rowe going close with a shot from outside the area parried away by Pym.

Andy Williams came on, replacing James Coppinger, with Marquis the next to go close as he headed wide from a corner.

Rovers went for the jugular, with Alfie May coming off the bench in place of Conor Grant.

A good move ended with Tommy Rowe heading wide after 85 minutes.

But the visitors made it 3-1 after 87 minutes when Craig Alcock was dispossessed by Ollie Watkins, with McAlinden then through on goal to clinch the points.
