Bennett looks to emulate Rovers Icon

17 April 2015

Winger expresses his desire to stay at Rovers long term after winning the fans over this season.

The young winger has given Paul Dickov something to think about of late, after putting in a string of fine performances in a Rovers shirt.

“I can't put my finger on my form at the minute,” he said.

“Sometimes you just get lucky. I scored two against Sheffield United and then again straight after against Rochdale.

“I feel I've found a bit more consistency in my game this season, which is what I've been striving for for some time. On a personal level I'm pleased because being consistent is important as a player and always something I wanted to be.”

Bennett has made 27 starts in League One for Doncaster this season, scoring 8 goals from midfield.

“I didn't really get my chance last season, but I've come back this season and the gaffer has given me a go so I’ve really tried to get my head down and push for a starting place.”

Whilst the play-offs seem an unrealistic target for Rovers with only four games remaining, the former Wolves Academy player says they still have plenty to play for.

“It’s looking unlikely we'll make the playoffs, but we still want to win every game and finish the season as strongly as possible.

“It's not over yet. We've still got games to win and we want to put a show on for the fans who watch us every week. It's important that we stay together as a team and win these last few games.”

Despite being out of contract in the summer, Bennett has expressed his desire to stay at the Keepmoat long term.

“I want to stay at Doncaster. I've been here four years now and it feels like home to me. I know the place, I know the people and I want to play my football here next year and long term.

“You look at Copps who’s been here eleven years, that's a long time and a great achievement. It's always nice as a player to get the support and recognition from the fans. I went through a tough time a year or two ago but I like to think I've won the fans over this season and hopefully I've done that.

“There are a lot of players out of contract this summer and I'm sure the gaffer will be looking to bring in a few fresh faces but I want to be here next year and I look forward to having that conversation with him.”

Bennett, like James Coppinger, has said that he hopes Rovers can use this season as a catalyst for success in the future.

“There is a great basis here for promotion to be our aim. We are a great club; you look at the stadium, the fans, the manager, the training ground and it's all there for us so next year has the potential to be a really big year for us.

When asked about his performances over the course of the season, Bennett admitted that he felt he had improved as the season went on.

“I'm 24 years old now and in football terms I'm not a 'young lad' any more. I've played five or six seasons in the Football League now and I've definitely learnt a lot about the game and found some consistency in my performances.

“I feel a lot more positive this year, I feel I've changed my mind set. I'm more mature as a person and as a player and it's worked for me.”
