Brian Horton Confirmed As Assistant

Doncaster Rovers are pleased to announce that Brian Horton has been appointed Assistant Manager of the club.

Horton, who has previously managed teams including Manchester City and Hull City, has amassed over 1000 games as a manager and brings manager Paul Dickov a wealth of experience.

With over 20 years of managerial experience, Brian will provide Dickov with the invaluable knowledge of the game which he has gained throughout his managerial career.

Beginning his managerial career at Hull City, Horton spent four years with the Tigers overseeing almost 200 games before moving on to Oxford United. After a five year stay with Oxford, Horton made the move back north to take the reins at Manchester City. 

Horton spent two seasons at the helm of City before moving on to Huddersfield Town. The vastly experienced Horton has also held managerial positions at Brighton, Port Vale and Macclesfield.

In 2007, Horton was appointed assistant to manager Phil Brown at Hull City. In May 2008 City reached the top flight, under the stewardship of Brown and Horton, for the first time in 104 years.

Speaking to Rovers Player Brian expressed his delight on joining the club: “It’s brilliant to be here. It’s a great club with a fantastic training ground and stadium and with promotion to the Championship last season I’m really looking forward to it.

“I was asked by Phil Brown whether I would go to Southend, which I chose not to do. Paul [Dickov] then asked me what I was doing and whether I would be interested in joining him here if he got the job. We sat down and had a chat and discovered we have the same footballing ideas so I’m delighted to be here with him.

“I know Paul through the Manchester City connections and when we spoke he said he wanted some experience with him and that is why I decided to come – it’s great to be back in football.

“This is my 49th pre-season and when you’re not in the game you miss it so it is great to be here with this set of players and staff.”     

On the confirmation of Brian joining his backroom staff, Paul Dickov said: “Brian is someone who will be fantastic for me having managed over 1000 games and probably had around 6 or 700 games as assistant manager too.

“Having his experience, along with that of Brian Flynn, will be invaluable to me.”
