Butler's Wembley Aim

22 May 2015

Andy Butler has told doncasterroversfc.co.uk that he is looking to get back in to the groove as soon as possible before the start of pre-season.

The commanding centre back gave an insight in to daily life during the off season, perhaps disproving certain footballer stereotypes.

“I was ill in the first couple of weeks of the off season but I’m already back running a few miles at night, just to keep the body ticking over,” said Butler.

“It makes pre-season just that little bit more bearable but I can quite easily get itchy feet and wanting to do other things.

“I’m refereeing the Eve Merton Charity game on Saturday to keep me busy too!”

For some in the Football League, the season is yet to cease as this weekend brings play-off finals from League 2 (Southend United v Wycombe Wanderers), League 1 (Preston North End v Swindon Town) and Championship (Middlesbrough v Norwich City).

“I thought Swindon would actually win League 1 so I’m going to stick with them for this game as I think Wembley will suit them, they’ve just got to cope with [Joe] Garner and [Jermaine] Beckford,” he said.

“In the Championship I fancy ‘Boro and Wycombe – who impressed on TV the other day – are my tip for League 2.

"It won’t be easy for them against Southend’s good defence but I’ve got a friend there in Paul Hayes so I wish him well.”

Butler is yet to feature underneath the famous arch, but wants to put that right before the end of his career.

“I’d rather get up automatically to be honest!” admitted Butler.

“That would be easier than having to go through the mill at the end of a long season because it’s a nightmare if you fail to make it.

“However, appearing at Wembley is something I want to and really want to achieve in whatever capacity – player, manager, referee, whatever – just to be part of that atmosphere!”
