Copps: That could be the difference

Midfielder hails "massive" result at Millwall.

Rovers stalwart James Coppinger echoed the sentiments of his manager Paul Dickov and declared that the team were “delighted” at gaining a point against Millwall on Monday after playing for close to 50 minutes with ten men.

“Obviously with a man getting sent off it was hard for everybody but what a performance from everybody. To come away with a point after the disappointment of going down to ten men, we’re delighted,” he said.

Abdoulaye Meite had seen red for his challenge on Millwall forward Stefan Maierhofer in the first half of a nervy encounter, which neither side could afford to lose, but it was a tackle which even had Lions boss Ian Holloway stating it was debatable.

“I think it galvanised the team, we’ve come here looking to get a win but straight away the mindset changes and second half I thought we were going to struggle to get out and attack and create chances so we played two banks of four with Browny up front by himself and everybody to a man was superb,” said Coppinger.

“The last five games we haven’t been getting the results that we need but everybody’s working hard and doing the right things and at this stage of the season that’s what you need; no one is shirking responsibility.”

Meite’s sending off ensured a formation reshuffle which saw Coppinger revert to his new found role of right back as Rovers clung on for a goalless draw.

“I’ve played there a few times this season and it’s good to be able to adapt and slot straight in and we didn’t have to make too many substitutions as it wasn’t the ideal game to come in to.

“I think we’ve deserved points out of the games we’ve had but to come away and put in a performance like that considering the circumstances is massive and to get a result at this stage of the season could be the difference in staying up,” he said.
