Dickov Looking For Reaction

10 September 2013

Manager Paul Dickov told the Official Website that he was looking for a reaction from his players on Saturday when we face Huddersfield Town.

The International break has fell at the right time giving time for assessment of the performance against Bournemouth and preparation for the game at the John Smiths Stadium.

Paul spoke about the application of his players in training during the fixture break: “It’s been good to have this break and as I said after the Bournemouth game that this international break might have come at a good time,” he said.

“Looking back at that game and the stats we have for it the lads who came to us without the pre-season build up such as Ross Turnbull, Theo Robinson and Bongani Khumalo have started to feel the effect of the games - this break allows us to work with them and get them fitter.

“To be fair to these lads who came in late they hit the floor running and adapted well with their enthusiasm for playing, but I feel it started to catch up with them a little so this break has come at the right time.

“Now the whole group have been able to get some good workouts in along with a bit of down time before our game against Huddersfield.

“Last week we did double training sessions as we will early this week.

“One of things we looked to do was more gym work in the afternoons with Ben Rome. This has got the players fitter because not only are we keeping them match fit but also looking at their conditioning and off the field fitness.

“The players were not happy with the last game but one good thing about football is that whatever the result you always get straight into preparing for the next game to put it right.

“The players were disappointed because we and they have set standards that we aim to achieve, and even in defeat we have played really good football, but in the last game we feel we fell below that.

“The players realise that if they drop below the standards set its hard to get results as it has proved. The attitude in training since has been fantastic and we have seen the lads working hard with the determination to put things right next Saturday.

“The one thing I want to see is a reaction to that game!

“We know Saturday will be a big game and a big crowd and our fans have been fantastic at Wigan and Charlton - they really do spur the lads on the pitch but it’s a double-edged sword in that we have to make sure we put the performance in.

“We cant rely on the fans to win us games, we have to start games at the intensity we want to play and make sure we do everything right.

“The good news is that I have got both Dean and Bongani back from South Africa without any injury problems. I looked at the results to see how they had gone on but also how they had played and if they got through the games without any problems.

“I have had good reports back from the manager about how well they played and hopefully that confidence from the game will transfer to Saturday’s game - it would be nice to see Dean score for us as he did for South Africa.

“I have a reserve game this afternoon, which will help to get some of the lads more match time, against Hull at the Keepmoat so that fits in well with training.”
