Foundation Friday: GAME ON

24 October 2014

Club Doncaster Foundation’s representative team headed to Derby recently....

...to take part in the Coalfields Regeneration Trust’s Game On Inter-Regional Tournament.

On offer was not just bragging rights against their counterparts from Wigan Athletic, Derby County, Hartlepool United and Port Vale, but the opportunity to represent England in the Game On Home International Tournament, due to take place in Scotland in November.

Game On is an initiative which encourages youngsters from coalfield communities throughout the country to use football to learn more about the benefits to living a healthy lifestyle, as well as team work, social interaction and inclusion.

Marie Hepburn, Club Doncaster Foundation’s Community Manager said: “The regional tournament was a fantastic event and gave our team the opportunity to interact with other players from clubs throughout the country. It’s great that they were able to showcase just how hard they have worked over the past year.”

Rovers, represented by youngsters from nearby Edlington and Dearne Valley, narrowly missed out on top spot and finished second place on goal difference, however were treated to the post tournament presentations at Derby’s iPro Stadium for the SkyBet Championship fixture between Derby County and Millwall.

The Game On programme, delivered as a result of a collaboration between the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, the only organisation dedicated to supporting the coalfield communities to help themselves, and The Football League Trust, has encouraged more than 700 young people this year to play safe and organised football in their local areas.

“This year was Doncaster’s first at the event and it was a terrific day to be involved. We’re thankful to the organisers at Game On for providing the Foundation and our participants with the chance to display their on field and off field abilities and we’d also like to give our thanks to the volunteers who help to bring this initiative to life,” finished Marie.
