Frickley Athletic 0-4 Rovers

Doncaster Rovers opened the pre-season schedule with a 4-0 against local side Frickley Athletic.

Manager Paul Dickov took the opportunity to select two different sides in each half to give the opportunity of game time to the senior pros, first year pros and a number of trialists.

Over 600 supporters turned out to see their team for the first time since Dickov took over. 

The hosts kept Rovers at bay for the best part of half an hour, however in the 24th minute Rovers dominance paid off when Paul Keegan saw his looping effort find the back of the net.

Keegan then turned provider, in the 33rd minute, for Chris Brown who scored his first of the evening. Keegan swung in a right footed corner for Brown to rise the highest beating the Frickley defence to the ball and heading past Tom Woodhead in the Athletic goal.

Brown then doubled his tally for the evening, in the 44th minute, ensuring Rovers went in at the break three goals to the good. James Husband’s pace and skill to beat his defender created the opportunity for Brown after the striker latched onto the goalkeepers attempted save from Husband’s goal bound effort. 

The second half saw Paul Dickov’s side line up with new signing Marc De Val Fernandez in midfield for his first taste of English football. 

Rovers started the second half in a similar vein as the first creating numerous chances to further extend their lead.

It wasn’t until the 72nd minute; however, when the lead was eventually extended Dave Syers saw his initial effort blocked by the keeper however the ball fortuitously found the back of the net after bouncing off his body.

The game ended at 4-0 and as would be expected Rovers dominated throughout. 

First Half: Neil Sullivan, Jordan Binns, Rob Jones, James Husband, James Harper,Paul Keegan, Kyle Bennett, Chris Brown and three trialists 

Second Half: Paul Quinn, Liam Wakefield, Tommy Spurr, Marc De Val Fernandez, Dave Syers, Harry Middleton, David Cotterill and Billy Paynter with three more trialists.
