Rovers began the campaign under Dave Penney at Belle Vue and finished it under Sean O’Driscoll at the Keepmoat Stadium and with a shiny national trophy to boot.
Belle Vue would not see second tier football despite the efforts of all concerned but Theo Streete’s speculative effort from range to dispense of two time former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest was a memorable way for the old girl to bow out.
O’Driscoll, who came in early doors to resurrect the campaign, did a fine job of guiding the club to the third rounds of both League and FA Cups amid the transition from Bawtry Road to Lakeside. The first six weeks in Rovers new home would prove eventful with heavy FA Cup defeat to Premier League Bolton Wanderers quickly forgotten with derby wins over Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United in the league.
More importantly though, O’Driscoll helped secure Rovers place at their first ever national cup final in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. Goals from Paul Heffernan (2) and Jason Price overturned a 5-3 aggregate scoreline in the Northern Area semi final second leg and the club were bound for the Welsh capital. Again they made it hard for themselves, surrendering the two goal lead given to them in the opening five minutes by Jono Forte and Heffernan but Captain Graeme Lee (above) thundered home a header in extra time to continue the upward curve.
