PREVIEW: Fulham v Rovers

23 September 2014

Capital One Cup R3, Craven Cottage, 8pm.

Doncaster Rovers take to the road once again, looking to cause an upset in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Fresh from their first home win of the season, Paul Dickov and his troops head to struggling Sky Bet Championship outfit Fulham looking to reach the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time in nine seasons.

Not since 2012 have Rovers reached the third round – a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Norwich – and, after scraping past York City in the first round and sailing past Watford in the second, a reunion with the Cottagers for the first time in more than 17 years beckoned.

The side’s last meeting came in April 1997 at Belle Vue in the fourth tier. A shade under 3000 fans attended on Bawtry Road for the stalemate in which Rovers still boasted the likes of Darren Moore and Colin Cramb in their ranks.

In fact it was the latter who had seen red in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Following Mike Conroy’s 51st minute opener, the fiery Scot lost his cool in front of over 5,500 at Craven Cottage and was shown a straight red card.

Just 12 minutes after Cramb’s early bath, Fulham had sealed the game courtesy of goals from Robbie Herrera and Richard Carpenter. The late Paul Birch pulled a consolation back for the visitors and remains the last Doncaster player to net against the Cottagers.
