PREVIEW: Posh v ROVERS

27 December 2014

Sunday 28th December 2014 (3pm), London Road, Sky Bet League One.

Doncaster Rovers make the short trip down the A1 on Sunday to face Peterborough United for the first time in three seasons.

The pair, managed by respective Scots Paul Dickov and Darren Ferguson, have not met in the third tier for a decade.

Remarkably, not only do the sides sit on 13 wins apiece from all encounters, but both sides share identical records in all fixtures, with Rovers poaching six wins on Posh soil and vice versa.

Both sides come in to the game following contrasting fortunes with Doncaster defeating Coventry at Keepmoat Stadium and Peterborough having lost 3-2 at Chesterfield on Boxing Day.

The last time Rovers travelled to Cambridgeshire was under the stewardship of newly appointed Dean Saunders and the Welshman, unbeaten in his first two games in charge was rewarded by his talismanic Captain and countryman Brian Stock, who thundered in one of the goals of the season to equalise Grant McCann’s 19th minute opener.

Livewire forward Kyle Bennett – on as a substitute – nicked the points midway through the second half when he calmly slotted home in front of the travelling support.

A rotten run from the turn of the year until the end of the season, was not enough to prevent Saunders’ side slipping to relegation and the return in February 2012 showed why.

With Rovers in cruise control thanks to Giles Barnes emphatic header on the half time whistle, the hosts were made to pay in injury time as Tyrone Barnett – a recent million pound acquisition – denied the hosts just their second win of 2012.
