PREVIEW: Rovers v Chesterfield

20 September 2014

Sky Bet League One, Keepmoat Stadium, 20th September (3pm).

Chesterfield are the visitors to Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday and will face a Doncaster Rovers side eager to get their first home win of the season.

Both sides drew in midweek – Rovers against a stubborn Crawley outfit, while Chesterfield fought back from 3-0 down to take a point at Preston.

It is the first time Paul Cook’s side have played at the Keepmoat Stadium in the league and Paul Dickov’s men will have to be on their guard when they come up against in form striker Eoin Doyle; the Irish striker has hit eleven goals in eight outings – including two successive hat-tricks.

The clubs – who first met in 1902 – have done so on 83 occasions and the meeting in 2004 in the third tier, ended a decade-long absence.

In the Spireites ranks that day was centre back Ian Evatt, who has now returned to North Derbyshire following his pivotal role in Blackpool’s Premier League adventures.

Goals are at a premium in these affairs with defences only being breached on eight occasions in the last seven meetings.

With Chesterfield’s relegation in 2007, and Rovers’ promotion in ’08, the sides have only met once – in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy – since 2007.

Mansfield-born striker Jordan Ball put the holders out of the competition with his first touch.

An inswinging corner from David Cotterill was met by the head of the 82nd minute substitute who planted his first and last Rovers goal past Richard O’Donnell to make an immediate impression with the Keepmoat faithful.
