The Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire, Shaun Wright was in attendance at ‘Project Youth’ last week to analyse the success and show his support for an innovative programme...
...being delivered in Rossington, Doncaster by Doncaster Rovers Foundation and Flying Futures.
The project funded by The Commissioner provides fun packed sessions for 11-19 year-olds during evenings in an attempt to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.
Session have been well attended with well over 50 people currently engaged in the project that sees participants taking part in a variety of activities including football, cricket graphic art, dance and drumming classes.
Tom Atherton project manager from Flying Futures noted, "We aim to offer young people an alternative from hanging around on the streets with nothing to do and give them something to look forward to on an evening that will keep them occupied, and help them socialise within their wider community.".
Doncaster Rovers Foundation Community Officer, Jan Budtz added, "The aim of the project is to get these young people engaged in positive activities on their doorstep, along with referring them onto other community projects in and around Doncaster. We have already seen people sign up for our education and NCS courses as a result of their continued interaction with Doncaster Rovers and Flying Futures”.
After the success of Project Youth in Rossington, the South Yorkshire Police and Crime has given the thumbs up to expand the project into a variety of different areas across Doncaster with Commissioner Shaun Wright saying “I became aware of Project Youth when they applied for funding from my Proceeds of Crime Grant.
“It was apparent then that the scheme is providing activities and facilities for young people to participate in as an alternative to antisocial behaviour and youth nuisance.
“The project was awarded £30,926 from money seized from criminal activities to continue with their good work. I have seen from my visit to the project that what they do is not only making a real difference to the young people involved, but is also helping me put into practice two of my key priorities in my Police and Crime Plan of reducing antisocial behaviour and protecting vulnerable people.”
