Promotion joy for Foundation girls

9 May 2014

Debut season ends in success.

The Doncaster Rovers Foundation under 14’s girl’s team rounded off a fantastic season, by winning promotion to the first division.

In only their first year as a team, the Foundation’s under 14’s came runners up in the second division, only missing out on the league title by two points.

Their brilliant success means the team they will now face the likes of Barnsley, Doncaster Belles, and Huddersfield Town next season.

Manager Helen Tuck said: “Our first season has been fantastic, it was great that we managed to win promotion.

“We have got girls from everywhere in the region, from Mexborough to Askern, everyone gets on really well and it is a really friendly environment to be part of.

“The team is inclusive, anyone can come down and train with us, we have girls of mixed abilities and it is all about the enjoyment of the game.

“One of our girls scored 41 league goals, everyone works so hard and it is great for them to be part of a tightly knit team.

“It will be hard next season, we know it will be a tough challenge following promotion, but one we are all excited for and looking forward too.

“We hope we can compete well at the higher level and gain mid-table safety.”

Due to the success of the Under 14’s, the Doncaster Rovers Foundation are aiming to set up a new under 10’s team ahead of the new season.

The new side will train on the state of the art 3G pitches at the Keepmoat Stadium Soccer Centre, whilst also get to represent Doncaster Rovers.

Tuck said: “Football has become increasingly popular for girls, along with the changing attitudes of women in sport.

“Doncaster Rovers is great to be part of, the girls love pulling on the shirt and feel great pride in wearing it.

“The football team gives the girls both ambition and responsibility, of helping the team do well and not letting their team mates down.”

Chief Executive of the Foundation Liam Scully added: “The Doncaster Rovers Foundation are delighted with the progress made by the under 14’s in their first full season and to win promotion is a phenomenal achievement.

“We hope to now be able to continue the success of our first year, with the expansion of another girls side and we really hope to build on the foundations laid by the under 14’s.”

The club will be holding open sessions at the Keepmoat Stadium for the new under 10’s team, if you are interested in getting involved, for more details please contact: helen.tuck@doncasterroversfoundation.co.uk
