Rossington Main 0 Rovers 3

9 July 2013

Chris Brown made it six goals in three games as Rovers recorded a 3-0 victory over local side Rossington Main.

A hot, sunny evening greeted the Rovers at local club, Rossington Main, who provided a guard of honour for the Rovers as they entered the pitch

The Rovers kicked off and generally had the best of the early possession culminating in the 9th minute with Spurr crossing from the left to the post where BROWN planted a good header into the far corner of the net.

Carrying on and keeping the ball mostly in the home half Husband was scythed down in the 15th minute for a free kick to the Rovers to the left of goal 25yards out. Furman took the kick but his low shot hit a defender and came out to QUINN on the right. His fierce shot from 25yards zipped past a static keeper for goal number two.

Four minutes later and SYERS took a pass from Philliskirk and from the edge of the area rifled low into the net. This reverse seemed to spur the home team into action. They began to win more of the ball and play in the Rovers half.

Past the half hour and Rossington forced a mistake from the Rovers defence and won a corner, which was cleared. However, Maxted wasn’t troubled unduly. The next clear chance fell to Rovers in the 39th minute when Chris Brown headed a Spurr cross from the left against the bar. A fairly even contest in the run down to the break saw Rovers going in at three goals up.

The second half was only minutes when the home team broke through on goal but a belated offside call by the assistant referee foiled their attack.

The Rovers followed this by going down the right with Griffin, who hit a low cross to the penalty spot where Peterson met it with a first-time shot but put it over the bar.

In the 55th minute, after Chris Whincop had a shot blocked the ball came out to Harry Middleton, 25yards out however he saw his high looping shot go just over the Rossington crossbar. Past the hour and following a corner to the Rovers, Peterson put a good header from 15 yards just wide.

The majority of the play was remarkably even in the second half without either keeper being tested. That was until the 70th minute when Peterson from the left edge of the six-yard box had his fierce drive beaten out by the keeper.

As the last fifteen minutes approached Rovers began to see more of the ball, Josh Meade had a terrific shot from the edge of the penalty area tipped brilliantly over the bar in the 76th minute, Middleton from an oblique angle stabbed the ball across the face of goal and out the other side. Furman had a late thirty yard drive saved in the 85th minute however neither team were able to break the second half deadlock and the scores remained at 3-0 to Paul Dickov’s men.
