Rovers manager has made his fourth signing in three days after the confirmation that former Rovers midfielder Wellens has re-joined the club.

After the confirmation of the arrivals of Bongani Khumalo, Ross Turnbull and Harry Forrester on Wednesday, Dickov has acted quickly to further bolster his squad ahead of the first league game of the season on Saturday.

Richie, who left former club Leicester City during the closed season, had been training with Rovers and made his first appearance back in the red and white hoops against Bradford last weekend.

The 33-year-old began his career at Manchester United before signing for Blackpool in 2000 where he went on to win promotion from League Two via the playoffs in 2001.

In 2005 he left the Tangerines to move to Lancashire rivals Oldham Athletic where he made 87 appearances in two seasons at the club. During his time at Boundary Park he became a fixture in the first team and made it into the 2006/2007 League One PFA Team of the Year.

After his spell at Oldham, Richie made his successful move to Rovers in the summer of 2007 where he became an instant fans’ favourite, helping the club rise into the Championship for the first time in 50 years after a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Wembley.

His time at Rovers’ came to an end in 2009 after he helped to club consolidate their Championship position as he moved to Leicester City for a fee of £1.2 million.

In his time in the Midlands Wellens made 129 appearances, scoring four goals, winning the club’s Player of the Year in 2011.

After a short loan spell at Ipswich last season, Richie has now rejoined the club on a short-term deal.
