A freezing cold night, with a light fall of snow was the scene at the Keepmoat Stadium as the Rovers prepared to meet Leicester City. The Rovers had Brian Stock missing from their line-up but Gareth Roberts was back, in his customary position at left-back and wearing the captain's armband. Jordan Mutch and Dean Shiels were also in the starting line-up, with Sam Hird and James Hayter making way. The Rovers defended the North Stand end in the first half.
The Rovers set the game on its way but Leicester got the ball and went on to the attacxk, winning a free kick, 20yards out. Solano took the kick, which was deflected for a corner followed by two more, from the last of which Morrison beat Sullivan to the ball but headed over. Leicester continued to press but were contained until the 9th minute when Dyer cut in from the left, played a 1-2 with Solano before shooting at goal but Sullivan blocked with his legs. Two minutes later and the Rovers won a corner from which Coppinger chipped to the middle, where Mutch headed into Weale's hands. His clearance caught the Rovers short at the back WAGHORN outpaced Roberts and slotted past Sullivan for the opening goal in the 12th minute. The snow or rather sleet was really coming down now. Five minutes on and the Rovers attacked, with Sharp giving to Mutch, whose drive from 20yards went just past the far post. Following a corner to Leicester the ball was cleared to Sharp, who raced through with just Berner barring his way but he never got round him becuse he was brought down in full flight. The referee deemed a yellow card for Berner was sufficient punishment. In the 24th minute a free kick to the Rovers was cleared by the Leicester defence to set them on a quick break for King to shoot over from 20yards. After a spell of even play that took the game past the half hour Oster, on the Rovers right, crossed for Coppinger to get in a header from the edge of the penalty area that Weale saved. At the rovers end, Wellens finished off a move by shooting through a crowd of players from 20yards but Sullivan was there to collect at the second attempt after the ball bounced off his chest. The Rovers had got more into the match as the last ten minutes came up but could not make the breakthrough. three minutes from the break, a good Leicester attack ended with Waghorn shooting wide from the left side of the penalty area. The goalkick sent Chambers down the Rovers right, a pass inside to Oster and a shot from 25yards went over the bar. Coppionger then had an effort from a similar distance saved before Mutch fired high over the bar from 30yards. The sleet had turned to heavy snow so that watching the match was like seeing through net curtains. The players no doubt relished hearing the referee's whistle for half-time.
Half Time - Doncaster Rovers 0 Leicester City 1
The Rovers brought on Hayter for Shiels for the second half and, although the visitors kicked off, the Rovers wered soon on the attack. Wilson had a go from 25yards on the right and Sharp, following a good build-up, took a pass from Hayter and from the edge of the penalty area to the right put just wide of the far post. Hayter then had a 20yarder saved before the Rovers won a corner through Sharp's tenacity. This all happened in the first ten minutes. Continuing to enjoy more of the play, the Rovers reached the hour mark with a lionk-up between Oster and Coppinger on their right. Getting to the right byline, Coppinger's shot was palmed in to the air by a diving Weale and caught by the keeper as he lay on the floor. In the 66th minute a good build-up by the Rovers gave Coppinger a shot from 18yards that Weale could only beat out. Roberts followed this with a 30yards effort which the keeper saved. It had been continuous pressure from the Rovers but they had not gained any reward. Leicester, having survived that pressure, initiated an attack to force a corner that came to nothing but back they came with Adams receiving on the left and getting in a drive from 25yards that Sullivan could only tip away for a corner on the Leicesater left. This brought another on their right, which Morrison headed ovedr the bar from close range at the near post. Then it was back to the Rovers with a good build-up started by Roberts from his own half that brought a corner to the home team. Further pressure from the Rovers brought no joy but in the 81st minute a cross by Oster, on the right, brought a header from Hayter but Weale saved. Two minutes later and Weale was there again to stop Coppinger from getting in a shot from 15yards, the ball away but Hayter, off balance, put it wide. Following on from this a cross from the right by Coppinger was deflected off a defender into the air and dropped for Sharp to get his head to it but he put it wide. Try as they might the Rovers failed to get the ball past goalkeeper Weale and so Leicester took away the three points.
