Another South Yorkshire 'derby' game, this time at the palatial home of Sheffield Wednesday, Hillsborough. A mild evening by recent weather standards saw the Rovers set the game in motion. In the second minute, the Owls got the first strike on goal when a tame shot from the edge of the penalty area from Varney was saved by Sullivan. The next action came in nthe 10th minute when the home team forced a corner, which was cleared. The Rovers then went on the attack down their right with O'Connor and Coppinger linking before O'Connor crossed to the near post where Wilson headed wide. Then the Wednesday got into the Rovers penalty area where, after a series of blocks the ball fell to the path of Tudgay but his shot hit a post and rolled all the way out for a throw in. Minutes later, the Rovers had a free kick in a central position 30yards out but Stock fired over. The next minute another Rovers attack led to Hayter's shot from 20yards going to Sharp, who mishit it but the Rovers won a corner. In the 21st minute, following a Wednesday attack Tudgay got in a strike from 7yards that Sullivan tipped on to a post before being cleared. A few minutes on and a cross from the right by Stock brought a looping header from the edge of the penalty area by Sharp that went over the keeper, a yard off his line and was going under the bar before Grant arched his back and tipped over the bar for a corner. Back came the Rovers for Oster to hit a low drive from 25yards that Grant, diving right, couldn't hold. Sharp got to it but his effort was deflected for a corner. Again Sharp got to the ball but his stabbed effort was again deflected for a corner. Past the half hour and Sullivan was in action to save a close range header by Tudgay. Coppinger then got down the Rovers right, turned inside and drove in a left foot shot that the diving Grant palmed round the near post for another Rovers corner. Having most of the play at this stage, a cross from the Rovers right by O'Connor was headed wide by Wilson at the near post. Hayter and Sharp then linked up well to give Hayter a crack from 18yards but Grant saved. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when a sustained Rovers attack found Sharp on the Rovers right. His cross came to WARD, with his back to goal but a magnificent overhead kick rocketed on to the underside of the bar and bounced into the back of the net. As the 45th minute came up O'Connor, for the Wednesday, hit a good shot from 25yards that Sullivan did well to save going to his left.Into added time and Tudgay had a 20yarder deflected for a corner. This was cleared out of defence to Sharp. who went on a fifty yard run, with the Owls defenders in pursuit. As Grant prepared to come out to meet him he fired wide of the near from 20yards.
Half time - Sheffield Wednesday 0 Doncaster Rovers 1
The Owls started the second half and went on to the attack culminating, in the second minute with a throw in on their right that brought a header which Sullivan pushed out at the near post for a corner. The Owls had most of the possession in the first ten minutes of the half before a free kick to the Rovers in the Owls half led to a wayward pass by Wednesday straight to Oster, who tried his luck from 30 yards but put well over the bar. Two minutes later and Sharp cut in from the right but his shot was deflected for a corner. As the hour mark loomed up Clarke, who had just come on, forced a corner for the Wednesday but this was eventually cleared. Then Gray, for the home team, cut in from the right and let fly from 25yards but was well wide of the far post. Hayter followed suit for the Rovers from the left. Then, on 64 minutes, from a sustained Rovers attack that caused multiple problems in the Wednesday defence, the ball came to Sharp on the right byline. He fired low to the near post where O'CONNOR (Wednesday) turned the ball into his own net for a second goal to the Rovers. The home team tried to hit back straight away and forced a corner, which was swung to the far post and hit the post before going out off Chambers for a corner. A quick break out of defence following the corner sent Sharp on the run but it broke down on the edge of the Wednesday area. There was no doubt now that the Rovers were in the ascendancy. In the 69th minute a good build-up by the Rovers provided Oster with chance of a curler from the left that was tipped round the far post by Grant for a corner. Another Rovers corner four minutes later eventually came out to Stock who shot just over from 20yards. The Wednesday did have the ball in the net after 76minutes following a free kick but it was chalked off for offside. The Rovers bossed the rundown to full-time playing possession football. A last throw of the Owls dice came two minutes into added time when Esajas was just wide of a post from 25yards. The whistle went on a brilliant win for the Rovers.
