The Rovers made two changes from Tuesday, Simon Gillett coming in for the injured Martin Woods and Mark Wilson replacing James Hayter, who, although on the bench, has carried an injury since Tuesday. The Rovers defended the South Stand end as usual in the first half, whilst the visitors got the game underway. The early minutes had each side feeling their way into the game before the Rovers forced a corner after five minutes. This was eventually cleared and the visitors made a quick break to the other end where Elliott put high over the bar from the edge of the penalty area. Chambers, for the Rovers, linked with Oster on the right to put over a fine cross that the keeper, Gerken, caught well diving forward, with Sharp waiting for a slip. Minutes later and Gillett fed Coppinger, on the Rovers right. He ran 30yards past a couple of defenders, got to the byline but his cross was too strong and ran out. Shiels then had a go from 20yards but was wide. Then, on 12minutes, a couple of City defenders got mixed up who should clear, SHARP ran on to loose ball, took it on before rifling in from the right side of the penalty area. The Rovers had the better of the midfield play over the next ten minutes. Then, in the 25th minute, Oster and Shiels linked up on the Rovers right for Shiels to cross to the far post where Sharp, under challenge, headed wide. Minutes later, Maynard, for City, tried a shot from 20yards to the right of goal that Sullivan shad no trouble in saving. Then Hartley robbed Oster of the ball halfway in the Rovers half and from 25yards tried to lob Sullivan but put over the bar. Past the half hour and the visitors forced successive corners but they were successfully defended. As time ran down to the break, the Rovers regained control. Coppinger took the ball from the halfway line before firing at goal but put straight into Gerken's midriff. A corner to the Rovers was then volleyed high over from Gillett from 25yards. Seconds before the whistle went for half time the visitors had to make a substitution when Sproule pulled up with a pulled muscle.

Half time - DONCASTER ROVERS 1 Bristol City 0

The Rovers set the game in motion but soon found themselves on the defensive. Three minutes in and a free kick to the visitors in a central position 25yards out was fired high over the bar by Hartley. A minute later Saborio, who had come on after the break, fired in a thunderous drive from 25 yards on the left that Sullivan could only push round a post. Successive corners followed for the City, from the second of which the ball was put into the Rovers net but the linesman had his flag up long before that. Then Saborio fired wide from just inside the area. Ten minutes in and the Rovers got back into the game with an attack down the right culminating in Gillett getting in a shot from 16yards that was just over the bar. Two minutes later and the Rovers won a corner on their right that Shackell, at the far post, headed wide under challenge. Continuing to press Roberts hit a right footer wide on the hour then Oster, on the Rovers left, swung a ball over to Coppinger, on the right, who turned it inside to Chambers but his drive was deflected for a corner. Successive corners followed but nothing came of them. In the 69th minute, a long clearance from Sullivan bounced over Nyatanga allowing Sharp to outpace him and run on goal but he scuffed his shot from the right of goal across the face of goal and out for a throw in. Five minutes later and the City won a corner on their left, which was eventually headed wide of the far post by Saborio. The Rovers shored their defence up by bringing on Hird as City tried desperately to get something from the game. Williams shot wide from 25yards then Haynes outpaced Roberts on the City right but fired high over the bar from the byline. The Rovers steadied the ship and played some of the remaining minutes in the opposition half so that at the end of four minutes added time the whistle went on another Rovers win that warmed the fans on a very cold day.
