A warm and sunny early summer-like afternoon welcomed the Rovers to Portman Road, Ipswich for their penultimate away game. The Rovers were unchanged from the West Bromwich Albion game but Ipswich showed a couple of changes following their loss at Watford, David Wright and Tommy Smith replacing Jaime Peters and the injured Damien Delaney.

The home team set the game in motion but the Rovers soon got possession. In the 5th minute a good link-up between Chambers and Emmanuel-Thomas on the Rovers right led to Emmanuel-Thomas cutting in between two defenders and hitting a fierce left foot drive that was blocked. A couple of minutes on and the Rovers won the first corner of the game but nothing came from it. Ipswich then got into the attack and were awarded a free kick on their left for a foul. The ball was played behind the Rovers back-line, the linesman kept his flag down as McAuley dashed in to head the bouncing ball from six yards but failed to connect. Minutes later Roberts received from Oster but his low shot was well held by Brian Murphy diving to his left. In the 17th minute good work by Chambers on the Rovers right had him getting past a defender on the byline and, following a couple of ricochets off defenders, it was eventually cleared. The home team then went to the other end and won their first corner on the right. The ball came out of defence and back to Leadbitter, who had taken the corner, for him to hit a low shot just past the far post. A couple of minutes later Mutch, for the Rovers, had a go from 30yards but was well wide. Just before the half hour a free kick on the Ipswich left was eventually put over the bar by McAuley. On the half hour Colback, for the home team, robbed Oster in midfield then ran on but his shot was deflected for a corner, which Smith headed wide. The Rovers then had a corner on their right which Hayter, under challenge, headed wide. As the last few minutes came up Wickham went on a run for goal down the inside right channel with Martis alongside him. Getting to the edge of the area he shot but the ball went so far wide of the far post that it was nearer the corner flag than the post. The Rovers followed this with Roberts receiving on the left, passing inside to Heffernan, who played it back to Hayter. He placed a curling shot for the top corner but saw it go just wide of the angle. The referee's whistle brought an end to an even first half with the score-line still goalless and neither keeper unduly troubled.

The Rovers got the second half underway but it was the home team who went on to the attack. A free kick on their left was met with a header at the far post which Smith put wide. Continuing to pressure the Rovers defence, a cross from the right was met to the left of goal by Norris but his header was wide of the far post. A corner followed for the home team but in the 57th minute indecision by the Ipswich attackers cost them a good crack at goal and the chance was lost. Two minutes later a cross from the home right gave Wickham a free header from 10yards but he put it over the bar. The Rovers got on to the attack in the 67th when Oster got to the right byline and forced a corner on their right. Emmanuel-Thomas swung it over to the far post where Hayter headed over. Then, in the 72nd minute, WICKHAM finished off an Ipswich move by touching past the advancing Sullivan and giving the home team the lead. Minutes later Walters fired over from 25yards. The Rovers were getting more into the game and forced successive corners and in the 82nd minute gained an equaliser. Shiels went racing into the penalty followed by Shane O'Connor, who clearly shoved him in the back, sufficient for the referee to instantly point to the penalty spot. After some protestations by the Ipswich team, SHIELS stepped up and slotted to the keeper's left as he went right. The Rovers were now having more of the play as Murphy tipped over a cross from Chambers. No further incidents of note occurred and the match was brought to a close, with each side taking a point.
