O'Driscoll: We Needed A Sense Of Purpose

Posted on: Mon 13 Apr 2009

Doncaster Rovers fell to a 2-0 defeat on Easter Monday, with Preston North End scoring the goals in a game which keeps their hopes of a Play-Off place alive.

Former Rovers loanee Chris Brown notched up the first, before Neil Mellor beat Neil Sullivan to seal the win for Alan Irvine's side.

After the game, Rovers' manager Sean O'Driscoll delivered his frank verdict on his side's performance.

"I'm probably as disappointed as I have been all season," said Sean following the match.

"I can live with people making mistakes, because the way that we play, you've got to encourage people to do things that are not the norm and to not panic in difficult situations, but I just thought that we lacked enthusiasm, focus, concentration. I can live with results, whether you win games or lose games, but not performances. We've lived and died on performances and I just didn't think that we were good enough."

"Things go against you in football, it's the norm and it's what happens and you can't go into a game or a season thinking that things won't go against you. What you are looking for then are people to rally around and try and do the right things. When I was a player, a manager would come up to you and say that you haven't worked hard enough and that's not the case; they've worked really hard, but they've got to do it with a sense of purpose and know what we're trying to do. If you don't, especially in this division, you'll get murdered. Credit to Preston, they're a functional 4-4-2, didn't do anything weird or wonderful and are a hardworking Championship side."
