O'DRISCOLL: WE SHOULD HAVE WON

Posted on: Sat 20 Mar 2010

Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll was in an upbeat mood following Saturday's South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United, despite a late deflected strike from James Harper giving the visitors a share of the points.

Rovers had taken a fifth minute lead through James Hayter and dominated proceedings in the first half; however the introduction of Glen Little and a spirited Sheffield United second half performance ensured that the game would end with honours even.

"We created enough chances against a very strong Sheffield United side," Sean told the press after the game.

"Everybody is disappointed, but people get carried away with things and it is only our second season in The Championship and I thought we were excellent. We played some football, we weathered the storm we thought; but you need a little bit of luck and the ball dropped to James Harper and his shot gets deflected. There's not a lot that you can do about it, but I was pleased with the effort. It was a difficult game for us, but I thought that we were first class."

"Credit to Sheffield United in the second half; they upped the tempo and pushed us back, but we are used to that in this division. We had a couple of great chances on the break, but overall I thought that we were excellent."

"I thought we should have won the game. If somebody said to me you could win by playing lucky or by playing poorly, you would take it everyday. But how to you prepare a team to play poorly and win? We are what we are and if we can play like we can and create chances, then on another day we could have won and on another day we could have lost it. With the amount of pressure they had in the second half, you can't begrudge them a goal - but we would have preferred it to be a consolation goal as opposed to a share of the spoils."
