Doncaster Rovers midfielder Brian Stock admitted his surprise in starting Saturday's 4-3 victory over Scunthorpe United, after being named as a substitute minutes earlier.
The Welsh international, who hadn't played for Doncaster Rovers since February after suffering a recurrence of a back injury, was drafted in to replace John Oster who suffered a knee injury in the pre-match warm-up.
"I've walked into the changing room and looked over at the manager. He's pointed to John Oster and told me that he is struggling and I thought 'Jesus, I'm going to be starting here!'" Stock smiled.
"It was a surprise but being a professional, you always prepare as if you are starting. It took me a while to get into the game and it was a bit hard with my fitness. I felt I did okay, I didn't set the world alight but I felt I did a job for the team."
"It felt great - it felt weird actually walking out. It felt like I hadn't done this before! As soon as the whistle blew for kick off and the first ten minutes had past, it all settled down. We played some great attacking football today, but we conceded some bad goals. We'll take the result and we have three points - I think we've finished the season on a high."
It's a massive boost for Stock, who admitted that he felt no negative reaction after playing sixty minutes of the game.
"I feel absolutely great," said Stock.
"It is this sort of thing that actually gets my back going and get it stretched, so it is a beneficial thing for me to play longer. I expected to play twenty minutes or half hour at the most, so to get sixty minutes in and to get a bit of fitness - it's what I needed."
