The 23-year-old striker or attacking midfielder impressed manager Dean Saunders recently in a three day trial spell at the club.

He made his professional debut at the age of 18 and was so highly rated he was given an unprecedented five year contract by Lorient.

Robert is the younger brother of former international star Laurent Robert who played for Newcastle, Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain.

He has made almost 40 appearances in the top flight of French football and last played a fortnight ago.

Fabien said: "I want to help the club stay in the Championship and this is an exciting challenge for me.

"I'm a technical player and like to score and make goals for my team-mates.

"When I came to train for a few days I was surprised that the club was in the bottom three because there are a lot of good players here."

He added: "I'm looking forward to getting started.

"I'm fit and ready as soon as the manager wants me to play."
