A big congratulations goes to all at Ridgewood school especially the girls P.E. Department. This week their Year 8 girls represented Doncaster Rovers against other regional teams in the U13's Girls Cup at Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium.
Back on a cold wet November evening at the Keepmoat Stadium the girls beat competition from 12 other schools to book their place as Doncaster champions. For the regional final the girls were drawn in a group with hosts Barnsley, Hartlepool Utd, Leeds Utd and Sheffield Utd with the other group consisting of Bradford City, Huddersfield, Darlington, Rotherham Utd & Scunthorpe Utd.
Game one saw the girls face rivals Barnsley. Unfortunately a goal against the run of play secured a 1-0 for the home team. Game two saw the girls from Ridgewood beat the eventual losers of the final, Hartlepool 1-0, with Olivia Mitchell scoring with a pure left foot strike from 15 yards. Game three was a disappointing result that had no reflection on their performance. They lost 1-0 to Leeds United who scored early in the game. However we were more than pleased when a member of the team pointed out that we won the game that really mattered at Wembley. Cheeky but true. Game four saw the girls get back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United. Emily Hobson-Pratt with what surely was the goal of the tournament. A right foot screamer into the top corner from just beyond the halfway line.
Two wins and a two defeats was unfortunately not enough to see the girls through to the final. Those places went to Hartlepool and Bradford City who were the eventual Yorkshire Winners.
Congratulations to all of those involved. You did yourself and Doncaster Rovers proud.
