Barnby Dun Primary School travelled today (Wednesday) to Nottingham to take part in the Football League Championship U11s Community Cup Northern Area Finals.
At stake was the chance to represent Doncaster Rovers prior to the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley in front of over 80,000 fans.
Barnby Dun playing under the banner of Doncaster Rovers, got a good start when Birmingham City's representatives failed to turn up, so were awarded the points. In the other group games they beat Blackpool 1-0 and Barnsley 2-0 and drew 1 - 1 with Nottingham Forest to qualify for the Semi Finals to take on Wolves. Once again they kept a clean sheet, beating the Wolves representatives 2-0.
The Championship Final was a tight affair and ended up at the end of normal play with no score to either side. So it was down to penalties with all the pressure knowing it depended on this to decide who would walk out at Wembley! It was Barnby Dun who kept their nerve and won 6-5 to get the chance of a lifetime.
Barnby Dun will face the representative team of Derby County in the final.
Eric Randerson, Community Manager: "This is a great achievement for both the school and the Club. We have now had a side in three out of the last four annual Community Cups which is good for the local community. It has taken hard work by the teachers, kids and the community coaches to make sure we have competed at this level to make Wembley. The kids will have a fantastic day out at Wembley that they will never forget whatever the score."
