Centre half Jones was a key member of Dean Saunders’ plans to increase the height and strength of the Rovers back line. He certainly did that with the acquisition of the former Grimsby Town, Hibernian, Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday ‘man mountain’. Following Jones’ release from Hillsborough, where he won promotion from League 1 last term, Saunders swooped quickly to add the vital experience and depth that was missing from the centre half positions. With over 250 league appearances to his name, 32 year old Jones took the armband for some pre-season games as well as the season opener at Walsall despite being a new signing.
