Belles head coach Zoey Shaw says the mood is great in camp as they head towards the season opener next weekend.

Shaw’s side host Leafield Athletic at Rossington’s Oxford Street on Sunday August 18 for the FAWNL Division One Midlands curtain-raiser, and the head coach feels the competitive edge in training is really helping her squad to bond.

“The mood is great in camp at the minute, the team morale is really high, we’ve been working on a lot in training, they’re bonding together really well, especially considering a lot of them are new to the squad, I’m really happy with the progress being made,” she said.

“They’re getting on really well both on and off the pitch which really is great to see, the sessions are starting to change a bit now, we’re tweaking things and changing things up, but the girls are working really hard.

“You can really start to see the competitive side within the squad at the minute, they know we have a big squad and they’re all eager to start that first league game, that’s good to see and it can only be healthy for each other.”

The Belles face Ossett United in their final pre-season friendly on Sunday and following last weekend’s win over FC United of Manchester, Shaw believes the key for her girls will be keeping that winning feeling going as they head towards the regular season.

“We’re looking to break things down into the individual stuff, splitting them up into their units and targeting individual things, we know what style of play we want to play, we know how we want to apply ourselves and it’s all about making those final adjustments,” Shaw added.

“Like we did last week, we’re going into this weekend looking to instil that winning mentality into the girls now, it’s all about that for us, we want to train well, tweak a few things, then go out against Ossett on Sunday and give a performance and get a win.

“It’s always good to get a win under your belt no matter who you play, I think the second half last week showed the quality that we had and we scored some really good goals, Sunday is all about doing the same as that, keeping that winning feeling going and getting the job done.”
