New signing Kirsty Johnson says the Belles’ attractive style of football enticed her into joining the club this season.

Experienced stopper Johnson brings a wealth of knowledge with her, playing in the FA WNL Division One Midlands last season with Steel City Wanderers, and she feels there is a real hunger within the squad to do well this year.

“I’m really happy to get the deal over the line, obviously the Belles are one of the biggest names in women’s football, and now, like everyone else, I’m focused on helping them get back up through the leagues and to where they belong,” she said.

“I started at Sheffield United when I was six and ended up spending 19 years there, then I had a season at Radcliffe who played in the Midlands league like the Belles are now, before heading up things at Steel City Wanderers as player/manager, so I feel I can bring a lot to help out here.

“There’s a really great style of football played here and that was a big factor in me coming here, there’s a lot of hunger within the squad, they want to win games and they’re working hard to go and do that.”

Johnson made her Belles debut in their first friendly game of the season against last season’s Division One Midlands champions West Bromwich Albion, and she says the big tests that are coming their way will do the side good in the long run.

“I think the girls did really well last week against West Brom, it was a real team effort from everyone, they were a side that had just been promoted, we might have lost but we worked really hard together,” she added.

“That sort of result is something we can work on and take that into the season as a positive, we’re looking forward to the games that are coming our way, especially the one against London City Lionesses, that’ll be the first chance I’ve had to test myself against a team like that.

“It’ll be a challenge for us all, it’ll be the biggest game I’ll have played in my career, like a few others I’m sure, there’s some big games coming up, and if we can get things right this year then there’s no reason why we can’t go on and win this league.”
