An early strike by Jasmine Saxton sees the Belles claim all three points, as they see off Wem Town 1-0 in the FA WNL Division One Midlands.

Belles victory could have been more comfortable but they found the visiting keeper in inspired form as she made save after save to keep the scoreline down.

Andy Butler made two changes to the side that drew to Boldmere St Michaels a week ago. Lily Wishart and Emily Cahill came in for Charlotte Dinsdale and Phoebe Sneddon.

Wishart was first to test the Wem goal on the 5th minute. A great pass by Jess Andrew found Wishart, her first touch got her beyond the defender and she unleashed a shot from 20 yards out, but it was well saved.

The Belles did get their noses in front early with brilliant pressing to win the ball back. They eventually worked it to find Saxton who slotted it past the keeper at her near post.

Andy Butler’s side continued to press for a second. Great pass by Freya Rattenbury found Jess Price. The forward turned well and got a shot away forcing the keeper into a smart save.

After the break, Wem started the brighter, forcing Sharpe into a superb stop to deny Kathryn Pagan.

Saxton pushed for her second and had two quick good chances in quick succession. First she dribbled past two defenders and firing a shot that was again saved by the keeper onto the crossbar, before a shot from 25 yards was tipped over by the keeper.

There was also positive news on the injury front with Sophie Scargill coming on as a substitute in the 90th minute to mark her return from an injury which kept her sidelined for 6 months.

Andy Butler’s side held on for the three points to keep their place at the top of the table and keep the pressure on those around them.
