The Belles’ FA Women’s National League Cup campaign gets underway on Sunday, August 27 as they travel to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Determining Round of the competition (2pm).

New management duo Sam Winch and Alexandre Brito Nogueira saw their side run riot last Sunday, getting the season underway with a 7-1 victory away at FC United of Manchester in the FAWNL Division One North.

Striker Jasmine Saxton hit a brace, while Sophie Brown, Lindsey Tugby-Andrew, Holly Housley, Nat Banaszczyk and Mollie Barlow all also got on the scoresheet.

Now, the Belles travel to a Wolves side who for the last few years have been competing at the very top of the tier above.

Losing just one game all season in 2021/22, Dan McNamara’s side won the Northern Premier Division in the FAWNL, but were denied promotion as they lost the play-off final against Southampton, who had won the southern equivalent league.

And losing two league games last term, the Wanderers then finished 2nd, pipped to the post only on goal difference by a Nottingham Forest team who would also go on to lose out in the play-off final, Watford the victors on that occasion.

This season, the winners of both the Northern Premier Division and southern equivalent will be promoted to tier two, and Wolves – like the Belles – got off to a winning start last weekend.

Grinding out a 2-1 victory away against Derby County, Amber Hughes and summer recruit Eloise Wilson were the pair on target for the visitors.

The winners this Sunday at the Compton Park Training Ground will progress into the first round proper of the competition, won by Forest last year.

All is not lost for the losing side though, they will go into the FAWNL Plate. Leeds United won that piece of silverware last season.

If any supporters wish to make the trip to back the Belles in person, the postcode to locate the venue is WV3 9DU.
