Belles manager Ciaran Toner was delighted with the control his side showed in the 2-1 win over Chorley.

Following success in his first game inside the home dugout, the Irishman was pleased to see the Belles show their work on the training ground.

Toner said: “I was really pleased with the girls because we mentioned in training what we were trying to embed and it was always going to be a test for them to do it in a competitive league fixture.

“Overall I thought that we controlled most of the game though.

“At 1-1 I thought the momentum changed slightly but we tweaked a few things and swung it back into our favour.

“I think we could’ve scored more goals because they were having to put bodies on the line at times but on the whole I’m really pleased with what I’ve seen.”

Skipper Jess Tugby-Andrew opened the scoring from 35 yards before Jasmine Saxton secured the three points late on as Toner credited the entire squad.

He added: “Jess was outstanding and scored a great goal to top that off.

“All of the girls really put a shift in though. They tried to do the right things, tried to be brave in possession and that’s what we wanted.

“Ultimately, that’s going to put a bit of pressure on ourselves but that’s the type of pressure we want.

“Obviously we’ll have to get better at managing that, but it was great to see Jasmine on the scoresheet because that will give her that confidence from dominating up top.

“It was great to see the girls wanting to play after last week’s postponement and now we’ll get back on the training pitch and ready for the new year.”

The Belles were pegged back in the second half but Toner never doubted his side’s ability to go on and find a winner.

“A few people have said that previously the girls might have struggled to come back again after conceding but there were no issues there from my perspective,” he said.

“If you look at the game objectively, we were well in control.

“Those things are going to happen and we can’t have everything our own way.

“We have to find ways to be that resilient and come back by sticking to our principles so it was all about our mental focus and noticing when we had to manage momentum swings.

“That’s just standard practice and we’ll work on that.”

The result marked two wins from two for Toner since taking over in November and he is keen to carry that on into the new year.

“It’s always good to get wins, I am a winner and I want to win as much as possible,” he said.

“For myself it’s really pleasing to get that first league win with the club, three points and it pushes us in the direction that we want to go in.

“We want to be closer to the teams above us and we’ve taken a big step forward towards that.”
