Assistant manager Amanda Greenslade says the fact the Belles can feel hard done by with their FA Cup exit at the hands of Rugby Borough shows the progress the side has made in recent weeks.

After falling behind early, the Belles pushed higher-league Rugby all the way and struck the post in stoppage time before the visitors secured the 2-0 on the break.

Greenslade – appointed as assistant to new manager Ciaran Toner – feels the Belles missed an opportunity against the FAWNL Premier Division South outfit, which demonstrates the improvement of the side.

“We’re disappointed because we thought that we could’ve got the win but I think that shows how much progress we’ve made in the last couple of weeks,” she said.

“It was a tough game but we had the opportunities to take the game so ultimately the girls are really disappointed with the result.

“We did really well but that’s the standard of where we want to be.

“We want to be competing against teams at that level and we matched Rugby on the day.

“Ultimately, if we keep playing that way, hopefully we’ll be joining them in tier three shortly.”

“After the red card we should’ve really picked up to get that equaliser and it’s a shame it didn’t happen but we’ll try to rectify that next time out.”

Greenslade believes the performance against Rugby provides something on which the Belles can build as Toner begins his tenure at the club.

She added: “It’s really important that we carry the performance forward now.

“Ciaran will be coming in this week and he’ll really get into the girls to set up his style of play and how he wants to do things.

“He’s been brilliant so far, he spoke to the girls at half-time and they responded really well to him so I think we’re all really exciting to see what’s next for the Belles.

“We’ve got a good couple of weeks coming up now with different types of opposition to face so hopefully the girls will take all that information on board and we’ll be able to kick on.”
