Captain Jess Tugby-Andrew believes sticking to their principles was key in the Belles booking a place in the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Senior Cup final for a second successive year.

The Belles fell behind at Barnsley Women Reserves midway through the first half but responded superbly to secure a 3-1 triumph, with Tugby-Andrew giving them the lead in the game before the break.

“It was a pretty tough game to be fair,” she said.

“I think credit needs to go to Barnsley because they came out and wanted to win the game.

“We didn’t deal with it to begin with but we stuck with our philosophy. We did make mistakes but pushed ourselves, we pushed each other and we got the result in the end.”

On her goal, Tugby-Andrew said: “It was a corner from Titch [Holly Housley], who had been putting some good corners in just before and I think Hannah [McWilliams] got a little flick on.

“I just managed to follow up behind with a little volley. Thankfully it went in and I was really glad to see it hit the back of the net.”
