Ciaran Toner has backed the Belles to deliver a strong response after falling to a 5-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Belles were comfortably beaten by the league leaders and Toner was very disappointed in the performance from his side.

But he is confident they will be much improved when they travel to York City on Wednesday evening at the LNER Community Stadium.

"Middlesbrough are league leaders for a reason and congratulations to them," Toner said. "I thought they were better in all departments.

"We just have to move forward. We’ve got a game on Wednesday. It’s going to be a tough game. We need a response and I’m pretty sure that we’ll get one.

"The great thing about the York game is that we have an opportunity to at least put some things right and work things in our favour. We’ll just look forward to that.

"I’m expecting a big response, but we know that it’s going to be a tough game as all the games are in this division."

Middlesbrough took the lead after four minutes and were 4-0 up by half time before finding the fifth with the last kick of the game.

"The first half killed us, early on losing two goals to set pieces," Toner said.

"It just killed us really. Then going in 4-0 at half-time, really we know the game’s over. It just became a bit of a non-event in trying to play with a bit of pride and to try and keep the score down, which we did.

"But it’s not hiding anything - we were way off the levels."
