PREVIEW | Barnsley Women v Belles

The Belles are in action for the final time this season as they visit Barnsley Women on Sunday (2pm)

Ciaran Toner’s side go into the fixture off the back of late heartbreak at Hillsborough last week in the County Cup final, and are looking to set the record straight in Sheffield to finish the season on a high.

Despite eventual cup defeat last time out, the Belles remain five unbeaten in the league, and face a Barnsley side who have experienced mixed form since the two sides last met at the start of March.

An Arianne Parnham goal separated the two sides that day, putting a big dent in Barnsley’s hopes of winning the title.

The result marked a flagship win for Ciaran Toner in his tenure at the club, as his side proved their capabilities against the top sides in the division.

And he’s looking for a repeat of that performance in March to round off a successful first season with the Belles.

“It’s a game that we want to go and win, and it’ll be a tough game,” he said.

“Yes, they’ve fallen off towards the back end of the season, but they’ll be invigorated by that.

“The fact that we beat them in the last game means they’ll be wanting to win.”

The Belles sit seventh in the National League Division One North ahead of kick off on Sunday, and whilst they can’t be caught by teams behind them, they could rise as high as fifth with a victory, save for a 6-goal swing between themselves and Leeds United.

Sunday’s hosts meanwhile sit 4th, although they could rise one place should results go their way.

The final day clash will be held at the Olympic Legacy Park in Sheffield, with tickets available on the gate.
