Rovers ensured a birthday to remember for manager Gary McSheffrey after leaving it late to come back from two goals down at AFC Wimbledon and continue their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League Two campaign.

The hosts looked to be well on their way to a triumph after a double from substitute Nathan Young-Coombes.

But a Tommy Rowe strike followed by an added time header from Ro-Shaun Williams - his first ever senior goal - ensured Rovers earned a share of the spoils to mark McSheffrey’s 40th birthday.

The manager would have been frustrated after seeing his side fall two goals down in a game where they had produced the better of the possession play and allowed chances to go begging.

But the tremendous battling spirit shown already this season by his players was showcased again with another remarkable fight back.

McSheffrey made two changes from the side that started against Sutton United in the league the previous weekend with Lee Tomlin and Tom Anderson coming into the side.

Rovers produced the game’s first attempt on goal when George Miller met an Adam Clayton corner and flicked a header on target.

Moments later Ethan Chislett fired on goal from 20 yards, drawing a steady save from Rovers keeper Jonathan Mitchell.

Rovers enjoyed the better of the possession in the first quarter of the game but found the Dons a difficult nut to crack.

James Maxwell cut inside from the left and stabbed the ball towards goal with the outside of his boot, narrowly missing the head of Miller.

Mitchell needed to be alert at the other end, producing an excellent save to keep out a rasping first time drive from Josh Davison.

And it took a timely intervention from Ro-Shaun Williams to prevent Ayoub Assal from poking home for the hosts after meeting a dangerous cross from Lee Brown.

Lee Tomlin went the closest to breaking the deadlock for either side in the first half when he curled a 20 yard free kick over the wall and struck the post.

Tommy Rowe hooked a shot on goal after a scramble in the box but struggled to muster the power to trouble Nik Tzanev in the Dons’ goal.

Harrison Biggins smashed a shot from close to 30 yards that flew narrowly over as Rovers continued to push.

The final chance of the half saw Miller spin on a shot that deflected wide, following a dangerous run inside from Kyle Hurst.

The hosts enjoyed more threat in the early stages of the second half. Chislett fired over the bar from the edge of the box after the ball was pulled back to him.

Chris Gunter fired narrowly over after meeting a dangerous cross first time while Assal drew a simple save from Mitchell after a fine run into the box.

Rovers went close ten minutes in the second half when Biggins stabbed a cross to the back post only for Rowe to be blocked out in his attempts to head home.

Rowe was on the end of another cross moments later, this time a chipped effort from Tomlin, but could not turn his header on target.

The hosts thought they had broken the deadlock just after the hour mark when Davison drilled in from close range, only for play to be brought back for a free kick.

Assal shaved the outside of the post with a shot as the game continued to open up.

Wimbledon did take the lead on 76 minutes when Young-Coombes poked home after Mitchell saved Davison’s header, sparking a goalmouth scramble.

Substitute Tavonga went close to equalising shortly after his introduction. The youngster cut inside to the corner of the box and curled a shot which dropped onto the roof of the net.

The hosts looked to have sealed the win six minutes from time when Young-Coombes met a cross from Assal with a side-foot strike to carry the ball into the bottom corner.

Rovers put some doubt on the outcome three minutes later. The ball rolled to Rowe who lashed a shot into the far corner from 20 yards.

And there was more to come. Deep into stoppage time, a Clayton corner was flicked on by Kieran Agard with Williams flicking a header that dropped into the corner, sparking bedlam in the away end.
