Two goals in two minutes from Luke Molyneux helped impressive Rovers on their way to a 2-0 win at Swindon Town.

The winger had been searching for his first Rovers goal but grabbed one and two in quick succession for a well deserved triumph at the County Ground.

Much the better side in the first half, Rovers soaked up pressure well in the early stages of the second before Molyneux’s quickfire brace decided the contest.

Danny Schofield made two changes to the side that started in the win over Tranmere Rovers. Joseph Olowu was handed his first start since suffering his initial facial injury at Rochdale in early October while Ben Nelson also returned to the XI. Tommy Rowe was passed fit to take a place on the bench.

The start to the game from Rovers was excellent, both on and off the ball. Pressing high up the pitch forced numerous errors from the hosts and ensured Rovers were rarely on the back foot during the opening quarter of the game.

Tom Anderson rose well to meet a Luke Molyneux cross but his header looped straight into the hands of Swindon keeper Solomon Brynn.

George Miller reacted well to latch onto a slack header back to Brynn by Tom Clayton and looked to lob the keeper only for the ball to drop just wide.

Rovers continued to force mistakes and Kyle Hurst saw an effort blocked from just inside the box after a pass out was intercepted. Charlie Lakin stole possession 30 yards out, with Miller then laying off to Ben Close who dragged a shot wide.

Another fine cross from Molyneux fell perfectly for Hurst who powered a header which Brynn clawed away well.

Jonathan Mitchell was forced into action for the first time on 25 minutes when he tipped over a powerful shot from distance from Wales international Jonny Williams.

Miller hooked a shot on goal from ten yards after Hurst was crowded out running into the box, but there was a simple save for Brynn.

In the last action of the half saw Jake Cain smash a free kick off the upright from 25 yards. Conceding before the break would have been more than a little harsh on a Rovers side that were comfortably the more impressive outfit.

Swindon started the second half stronger and put Rovers on the back foot for a sustained period for the first real time in the contest.

Cain curled a free kick wide in the early stages of the period. The midfielder was a lively presence for the hosts and smashed a pile driver narrowly over the bar from 30 yards.

Ben Nelson produced an excellent tackle to deny Williams clear sight of the Rovers goal as he latched onto a ball forward. Ronan Darcy fired over the bar from 25 yards as Swindon continued to push.

But just as fears grew that the hosts were taking control, a quick fire double from Rovers changed the complexion of the game - after Molyneux had seen a planted header pushed wide by Brynn.

First, on 71 minutes, he collected the ball wide on the right, cut inside, darted into the box and drilled a low effort home at the near post.

And two minutes later, Molyneux doubled the advantage. Miller outpaced the defence to collect a ball over the top, before holding up play and laying off for Molyneux who curled in a superb effort.

Rovers managed the remainder of the game superbly, denying the hosts any clear opportunities over the final 15 minutes.
