Rovers stepped up their pre-season preparation with a win away at Nuneaton Borough.

Goals from George Miller and new boy Josh Andrews fired Rovers to their second victory of pre-season.

The first-half was dominated by Rovers, but Nuneaton had their moments in the game that kept Rovers’ defence switched on.

Trialist B made a great start to the game, creating a physical and creative presence within the midfield, and helped Rovers get the ball forward during attacking spells in the first-half.

And it did not take long for Gary McSheffrey’s side to take the lead. Following a corner routine, a ball from Adam Clayton was finished superbly by Miller. Nuneaton did almost respond immediately after, but brilliant defending from Joseph Olowu and goalkeeping from Jonathan Mitchell kept them at bay.

Chances continued to come Rovers’ way through Tommy Rowe and a handful for Miller.

Matty Stenson had a couple of snapshots on Mitchell’s goal, but Rovers’ shot-stopper was equal to the efforts.

After a refreshing water break in the Midlands heat, Rovers did not let off the pressure. They kept Nuneaton pinned inside their own half, forcing the home side into giving away last-ditch tackles for free-kicks.

Rovers went into the break a goal up.

After the interval, new signing Josh Andrews was brought on in place of Griffiths. He got himself straight into the action, heading a ball down into the path of Miller who hit the ball inches over the bar on the volley.

Around the hour mark, McSheffrey started making the customary flurry of pre-season changes with Louis Jones, Kieran Agard, Charlie Seaman and a trialist coming on within a 10 minute window of each other. During this transition period, the game quietened for a bit.

However, Rovers eventually got back into a threatening stride and ended up doubling their lead. Fresh off signing for Rovers just a day before, Andrews scored from six yards out. Initially, his header was cleared off the line, but he remained calm and composed to finish the rebounded effort.

As the second period continued to see a rotation of players come on and off the game eventually cruised to an ending that saw Rovers comfortably win.

Rovers will continue their preparations for the new season with a visit to Spennymoor Town on Wednesday, July 13 at 7pm.
