REPORT | Rovers 4 Accrington Stanley 0

13 April 2024

Rovers’ phenomenal run of form powered on as they strolled past Accrington Stanley for an eighth straight league win to climb to eighth in Sky Bet League Two.

Goals from Hakeeb Adelakun, Joe Ironside, James Maxwell and Owen Bailey saw Rovers coast to a fully deserved victory and sixth clean sheet from their last eight matches.

They were simply quicker to the ball than their visitors throughout the afternoon for a comfortable and deserved triumph that extended the overall sequence of form to one defeat from 15 matches.

With Harrison Biggins missing out through injury, Grant McCann made one change from the side that started the win over Walsall as Zain Westbrooke came in for his first start since November.

Rovers started with great intensity from the off and took the lead on five minutes. Joseph Olowu found the run of Adelakun with a ball over the top and the on-form winger rifled a shot low on the angle which Radek Vitek could not keep out.

Ironside almost headed in a second moments later when he met a Luke Molyneux cross only to be denied by Vitek.

Tommy Leigh powered a shot in for Accrington only for play to be pulled back for a foul in the build-up. But Rovers were establishing a stranglehold on the game and conceded little in the way of opportunities.

And the advantage was doubled on 21 minutes. Adelakun sent the ball in from the left and Ironside met it with a first time finish to find the bottom corner for his 20th goal of the campaign.

Adelakun raced onto a ball from Sterry to put him inside the box but could not fire beyond Vitek.

Accrington produced their best chance of the game on the half hour as Alex Henderson surged clear into the box only for Thimothée Lo-Tutala to produce an excellent low save.

Ben Woods fired harmlessly across goal as half time approached with Rovers firmly in command.

The visitors upped their energy in the early stages of the second half but Rovers were soon back on the front foot. Molyneux finished superbly only for the offside flag to be raised.

Substitute Matt Lowe tested Lo-Tutala with a drive from 20 yards while Ironside drew a save from Vitek with a curling effort.

Rovers found their third just after the hour mark. Maxwell fed the ball to Westbrooke, who returned the favour as the full back surged into the heart of the box and finished with great composure for his first goal of the season.

Rovers continued to push with Ironside denied by Vitek from a first-time effort.

The fourth goal came on 72 minutes. Molyneux found space on the right and raced forward before opting against shooting himself and laying a pass inside for Bailey who clipped in first time.

Adelakun curled narrowly wide in the dying moments while Shaun Whalley struck the underside of the crossbar for the visitors in added time.

Rovers: Lo-Tutala, Sterry, Olowu, Wood (Anderson 63), Maxwell, Bailey (Broadbent 79), Craig, Molyneux (Hurst 72), Westbrooke (Rowe 63), Adelakun, Ironside (Waters 73). Subs not used: Jones, Nixon.
