REPORT | Morecambe 0 Rovers 3

6 April 2024

Rovers secured a sixth straight league triumph for the first time in 20 years as they beat Morecambe 3-0 at the Mazuma Stadium.

A first half brace from Luke Molyneux put them in command before Tommy Rowe rounded off the win in added time.

It was another magnificent team performance from Grant McCann’s side, who earned a fourth consecutive clean sheet by restricting their hosts to very few opportunities in front of goal.

And they could easily have won by a wider margin as the brilliant run of form continued to see them climb into the top half for the first time this season.

McCann made one change to the side that started the win over Wrexham four days earlier with Joe Ironside replacing Maxime Biamou.

The opening to the game was somewhat of a frantic affair as both sides looked to get to grips with the blustery conditions on the Lancashire cost.

And it was Rovers who took advantage of the wind at their backs to open the scoring on 12 minutes. Thimothée Lo-Tutala bowled the ball out over half way to spark a break, with Hakeeb Adelakun collecting and sending a fine ball into the box where Molyneux controlled and stabbed beyond Morecambe keeper Archie Mair with great composure.

Rovers were much the more threatening side after taking the lead. Harrison Biggins pulled a shot off target before Joseph Olowu could not quite get enough power into his effort as he met a Joe Ironside flick on in front of goal.

The lead was doubled on 23 minutes when Molyneux curled a 25 yard free kick around the wall and squeeze the ball into the bottom corner.

Biggins was forced off with an injury before the half hour mark in a rare blight on the afternoon for Rovers.

Adelakun was close to stretching the advantage just after the half hour mark when he touched the ball beyond Mair, only for Chris Stokes to race back and clear.

It took until the 35th minute for the hosts to threaten, with Jordan Slew drilling the ball across the face of goal and just beyond Ged Garner racing in at the far post.

Morecambe started the second half with intensity but struggled to test Lo-Tutala, who punched a goalbound corner from Jake Taylor off his line. Charlie Brown failed to hit the target with a free kick.

Adelakun fired straight at the keeper after a mazy run as Rovers continued to threaten, while Molyneux’s hunt for a third saw him drill over the crossbar.

Rowe sliced a volley off target from 25 yards as Rovers remained in control of proceedings.

Lo-Tutala was truly tested for the first time in the final minute of normal time when he got down superbly at his near post to push away a poked shot from substitute Joe Adams.

As the game ticked into the first minute of six added, the victory was capped. Kyle Hurst cut out a pass in midfield and slid the ball forward for Maxime Biamou, who squared across the box for Rowe to fire home.

The clean sheet was under threat before the end when former Rovers winger Jordy Hiwula was played clean through, but he fired into the side netting.

Rovers: Lo-Tutala, Sterry, Olowu, Wood, Maxwell, Bailey, Craig, Molyneux (Westbrooke 84), Biggins (Rowe 27), Adelakun (Hurst 85), Ironside (Biamou 74). Subs not used: Jones, Broadbent, McGrath.
