REPORT | Rovers 2 Tranmere Rovers 1

10 February 2024

Goals from Joe Ironside and Hakeeb Adelakun saw Rovers roar back to winning ways against Tranmere Rovers.

A closely-fought contest went back and forth, with Josh Hawkes finding an equaliser for the visitors in the second half only for Rovers to respond superbly and edge back in front within five minutes.

Rovers were much improved on the ball and showed real defensive resilience throughout, particularly in the later stages.

Grant McCann made two changes from the side that started the game at Sutton a week earlier with Luke Molyneux and Matthew Craig returned to the XI.

The visitors went close in the early stages when Connor Jennings flicked a header wide from a Rob Apter cross.

Joe Ironside almost stabbed in at the near post after good work from Adelakun, who went close himself moments later when meeting a deep ball in from Luke Molyneux.

Rovers opened the scoring on 15 minutes. Adelakun cut back onto his right foot and clipped the ball into the box where Ironside rose and flicked a header beyond Luke McGhee.

Chances were hard to come by in the mid stages of the half but Jamie Sterry almost caught out McGhee at his near post when rifling a shot on goal.

And Adelakun turned a header on target from a well-worked corner routine which saw Craig send a high ball to the back post.

The best chance of the half for the visitors came ten minutes from the break when Regan Hendry ran onto a ball across the box from Apter and placed a shot wide from 15 yards.

Richard Wood made a vital block at the near post to send an Apter effort off target.

Thimothée Lo-Tutala was called into action for the first time in stoppage time as he pushed a drive from Jennings out of play.

Tranmere started the second half on the front foot and Apter fired narrowly wide from 20 yards.

The visitors equalised on the hour mark when substitute Hawkes cut inside from the left and curled a shot into the far corner.

But Rovers were back in front within five minutes. Owen Bailey lofted a brilliant ball over the top for Adelakun to race onto before rounding McGhee and tapping into an empty net for his first Rovers goal.

Tranmere almost found a quickfire equaliser when substitute Harvey Saunders raced onto a long ball and volleyed off the upright from the edge of the box.

And Lo-Tutala produced a strong save to push away a low drive from Hendry.

The visitors piled on the pressure in search of a leveller but Rovers stood up well to deny them clear cut opportunities in the later stages.

Substitute Kyle Hurst almost made sure of the win when he raced onto a through ball from Craig only to be denied by McGhee.

Rovers: Lo-Tutala, Sterry, Olowu (Anderson 46), Wood, Senior, Bailey, Craig, Adelakun (Hurst 74), Molyneux, Ironside, Waters (Biggins 65). Subs not used: Jones, Maxwell, Broadbent, Goodman.
