REPORT | Scunthorpe United 0 Rovers 0

22 July 2023

Rovers battled out a goalless draw with neighbours Scunthorpe United in a soggy friendly at Glanford Park.

Clear cut chances for either side proved to be at a premium, with Rovers boss Grant McCann opting to change his entire outfield for the final 30 minutes as the season edges closer.

Weather conditions for the game were awful, with driving rain for the majority of the first half resulting in a difficult playing surface.

Scunthorpe got to grips with the conditions better in the early stages and put Rovers on the back foot from the off.

But it was Rovers who went closest to breaking the deadlock. A Scunthorpe defender almost turned a low Luke Molyneux centre into his own goal before George Miller was millimetres away from getting a decisive touch on a zipped through ball from Harrison Biggins.

The first real attempt of the game came from Scunthorpe, with Cameron Wilson latching onto a fine long ball only to fire straight at Ian Lawlor.

It sparked a mini flurry of opportunities. Straight from Lawlor’s clearance, the ball sat up nicely for Jon Taylor, who lashed a low effort on target while Molyneux saw a shot blocked after a driving run inside from the right flank.

Tyler Roberts collected the ball midway through the Scunthorpe half and powered forward but could not find the target from 20 yards.

The half petered out in chance terms from the midpoint, with both sides struggling to fashion danger in the final third.

Four minutes before the break, the ball dropped kindly in the box for former Rovers midfielder Alfie Beestin but he could not turn his effort on target.

Scunthorpe continued to have the better of the play early in the second period with Michael Clunan striking wide from 20 yards.

Biggins drew a stunning save from Iron keeper Ross Fitzsimons with a brilliantly struck free kick from 25 yards seven minutes after the break.

On the hour mark, the entire Rovers outfield was switched as McCann continued to build his players’ game time for the new season.

And the two sides continued to exchange opportunities. Kian Scales beat Jamie Sterry to the ball and poked a shot past Ian Lawlor but watched it roll agonisingly wide.

Deji Sotona met a half clearance on the edge of the box and sent a dipping volley just off target.

And it took a fine save from Lawlor to push away a strong drive from Scunthorpe substitute Callum Roberts in what was the game’s final real opportunity of note.

Rovers first hour: Lawlor, Seaman, Faulkner, Long, Senior, Taylor, Bailey, Biggins, Roberts, Miller, Molyneux.

Rovers final 30 minutes: Lawlor, Sterry, Olowu, Wood, Maxwell, Broadbent, Close, Rowe, Sotona, Ironside, Hurst.
