REPORT | Rovers 2 Crawley Town 0

3 October 2023

Rovers roared back to winning ways with an impressive 2-0 win over on-form Crawley Town.

A Mo Faal strike and a Joe Ironside penalty gave Rovers the victory over a side that had won five straight matches heading into their visit to the Eco-Power Stadium.

And it was nothing more than Rovers deserved after dominating the attacking play and showing real defensive steel to maintain the advantage.

Grant McCann made two changes to the side that started at Barrow four days earlier with Tommy Rowe and Mo Faal returning to the XI.

It was a scrappy start to the game but the visitors were quicker in getting on the front foot.

Klaidi Lolos fired over the bar before Laurence Maguire drew a fine save from Louis Jones with a header that was tipped over the bar.

Rovers settled into the game and Mo Faal drew the first save from Corey Addai in the Crawley goal after a surging run into the box from half way.

Crawley skipper Liam Kelly saw a shot deflect, while Nick Tsaroulla cleared the crossbar from the subsequent corner.

Rovers were close to going ahead midway through the half. The ball sat up kindly for Owen Bailey, who sidefooted on goal only for Addai to save and hold.

But they did take the lead on 27 minutes. Ironside stole the ball away from Jay Williams, giving him a clear run on goal but as he reached the edge of the box, he squared to Faal to slot home from 15 yards.

The lead was almost doubled immediately when Faal met a free kick into the box from Molyneux, but Addai made a smart low save.

The game became scrappy again as half time neared, with plenty of niggly fouls that went both punished and not.

Rovers started the second half the stronger and Ironside went close with a header from a Tom Nixon cross in the early stages.

Molyneux hit the bar with an in-swinging cross as Rovers continued to push while Nixon drew a save from Addai with a low drive after cutting in from the right.

Tsaroulla flashed a shot across goal in a rare moment of Crawley threat.

And Rovers extended their lead just after the hour mark when Joseph Olowu was hauled down in the box by Will Wright and Ironside smashed home from the spot on 62 minutes.

Faal was close to extending the advantage two minutes later when he cushioned a high ball and volleyed on goal, drawing a save from Addai.

Crawley pushed for a way back into the game but were met with a solid Rovers defence, who conceded very few opportunities over the remaining half hour to ensure a third league win in four matches.

Rovers: Jones, Olowu (Faulkner 81), Anderson, Bailey, Nixon (Roberts 90+1), Westbrooke, Close (Broadbent 89), Rowe, Molyneux, Faal (Marsh 81), Ironside. Subs not used: Lawlor, Sotona, Goodman.
