REPORT | Stockport County 1 Rovers 0

7 October 2023

Rovers were undone by a late header in a competitive clash with on-form Stockport County.

Tanto Olaofe glanced in the only goal of the game to see Stockport take the spoils at Edgeley Park.

Rovers had battled superbly throughout, particularly during a second half in which the hosts had the majority of the attacking play as they sought a sixth straight win.

Grant McCann named an unchanged side from the one that faced Crawley Town on Tuesday night.

With both sides showing great intensity off the ball, there was little flow to possession play for either side in the early stages and chances were at a premium.

Timely interceptions from both Joseph Olowu and Tom Anderson prevented Stockport from capitalising on dangerous crosses from the right from Macauley Southam-Hales.

The hosts arguably should have been ahead as the quarter hour mark approached when Olaofe galloped into space on the right and sent a low ball across the box for Louie Barry to tap in but the Aston Villa loanee failed to reach it.

Stockport looked to be the side in the ascendency and Will Collar smashed a first time effort from a corner into a team mate.

But Rovers grew into the game in attacking terms, and began to apply real pressure of their own.

Tom Nixon sent a threatening ball into the middle, forcing Hatters keeper Ben Hincliffe to make an awkward save while Mo Faal could not make a decisive connection with an acrobatic effort from a Zain Westbrooke cross.

Hinchliffe climbed over bodies to punch away a Joe Ironside header from a corner while Faal again went aerial for the follow-up but sent his shot wide.

The best chance of the half came from the visitors in added time when Ryan Croasdale raced onto a loose ball on the edge of the box and fired a shot which Louis Jones tipped wide superbly.

Hinchliffe produced a superb save of his own to prevent Rovers taking the lead early in the second half. Faal pounced on hesitancy at the back to nip the ball away in the box, only to see Hinchliffe block his shot and get across brilliantly to keep out Ironside’s strike towards an empty net.

Jones made an excellent stop moments later as he got his fingertips to Antoni Sarcevic’s lob from a tight angle.

Odin Bailey missed a glorious opportunity to give Stockport the lead just after the hour. He raced into the box to meet Olaofe’s low cross with only Jones to beat but skied his shot well over from ten yards.

Substitute Paddy Madden was picked out in space on the edge of the box but Jones made an excellent save from the first-time strike while Olowu sent a header from a corner straight at Hinchliffe at the other end.

The hosts took the lead on 84 minutes when Olaofe sent a glancing header into the corner from a Will Collar cross.

Rovers pushed for a leveller but found no real openings in the dying stages.

Rovers: Jones, Olowu, Anderson, Bailey, Nixon, Westbrooke (Marsh 86), Close, Rowe (Broadbent 77), Molyneux, Faal (Roberts 90), Ironside. Subs not used: Lawlor, Faulkner, Sotona, Goodman.
