Manager Dean Saunders was looking to add to his squad before tomorrow’s Capital One Cup tie against York City, although he admitted any deal would not be done in time for the player to play a part in the game, ‘Hopefully we will sign a player today, he won’t be able to play tomorrow as he needed to be signed before 12noon so hopefully he will be ready for next week,’ he said
‘I’ve got a number of players I’m looking at, if I can improve the team, no matter of the position, I will try to do that - we’ve looked at every position from the goalkeeper to the centre-forward, we’re looking to strengthen in all areas.’
Unusually, this season’s curtain raiser is in the League Cup and Rovers face York City for the first time since the Minstermen were relegated from the Football League.
‘This is a big game for us tomorrow, but not as big as the one next Saturday if I’m being honest, having said that we want to have a decent cup run but we’re a bit short of players for tomorrow and we’ll probably only be able to name two maybe three subs.’
‘It’s important we have a good start in the league and get points in the bag early, but first we have a cup game against York City. I fully expect them to be dangerous opposition; they’ve got a bit of momentum after doing really well last season under a good manager.
‘They’re a good footballing side, they’re big and strong so are dangerous from set-pieces.
‘I’ve told the players that we cannot underestimate them and go out thinking we will beat them because we are a better team. We have to go into the game, with full respect for York, and roll out sleeves up – I want to win every game so we will have our strongest team out there on Saturday.
'It's also the re-opening of the Stadium so it will be a great occasion for the whole town and hopefully the people of Doncaster turn up in force to support the lads.'
