Dean On Tough Brentford Test

19 October 2012

Rovers Player caught up with Dean Saunders ahead of this weekend’s game against Brentford and the Rovers boss spoke about how his team have started the season and what he expects from our visitors.

After a summer of rebuilding, manager Dean has been encouraged by his teams start to the season and admitted that, given the situation the club were in during the closed season, he would have taken the position the team are currently in.

‘If you had said to me that we would be in a position where we have a game in hand over other teams, and if we win that game we would be fourth or fifth in the league two points off second place, I would have taken that - I’m really pleased how the players have done.

‘We are defending really well and winning games, I think we’ve lost one in the last six but I would like us to score more goals but saying that Chelsea won the league three years back winning around seventeen games 1-0 – as long as we get the points it doesn’t matter.

‘We are scoring from set plays which I’m really pleased about and we’ve only conceded three goals from open play in 11 games, James Hayter’s goal for Yeovil, Crawley’s goal which was a deflection and Preston’s third. Those three are the only goals we conceded in open play all the rest have come from dead ball situations – nobody is ripping us apart, we look solid as a team and as a manager that’s what you want.

‘Brentford are quite similar to us; they’re a solid team. They have been playing together a lot longer then we have, and have spent a few years trying to get promoted.  They’ve got some really good players and are hard to play against. Although they don’t score lots of goals, I don’t think they have lost many games so it will be a tough game.’
